Forty-three years ago

Engineers and scientists started phase A of the creation of a reusable launch vehicle to replace the Saturn family of launch vehicles. Today after 135 missions into space the US space shuttle program comes to a close after an admirable term of service to our country. As an icon of American and human achievement today is bitter-sweet. We leave the shuttle era with no launch vehicle of our own ready to take us into space. NASA must focus its efforts on supporting, funding and delivering on a new launch vehicle.  The solar system is out there, waiting on us to explore, colonize and expand our reach.  There is a manifest destiny in the human race going to the stars. The alternative is to stay here and face extinction.
